Hey Oscar,

Yet another good idea. You could probably expand the topic of food types and eating habits to include eating rituals and customs among different countries. The cultural aspects of meals may be just as interesting as social issues that effect a person's diet. Just a little food for thought . . .

I think the assignment is transformed in a great way. It is meaningful because the students can make connections. It extends their learning to a different country instead of limiting them to their own lives. I think the ideas you give them to keep in mind will allow for interesting research and learning.

I like how you have students write about themselves in the Spanish class. I'm sure many students would be anxious about having to reflect in Spanish. You make the assignment more approachable by having the kids write about their own experiences.

Keep me in mind for when you win that lottery and start your own school!

What if you had your students in small groups and allowed them to use a wiki.

They could create something as simple as a venn diagram or some sort of table where they could organize the information they found. It would allow them to visually see the similarities and differences between countries, but also comparisons between the other students in the class. It could lead into the topic of culture and how it's not just about ethnicity. They could create a concept map about the factors that are included in people’s cultures.

That’s a great example to take a current assignment and transform it into a Web 2.0 lessons. I believe that the students would not only enjoy the new lesson but would also get more out of it. Having students research the issues that that prevalent in county will provide a realistic aspect why natural disasters, war ect. effect eating habits.

You really make it meaningful for the students by having them compare it to themselves. You could use bubbl.us for them to collaborate on a concept map. You could also use del.icio.us for them to track each others' bookmarks...

Your plan is really well organized and encourages higher level thinking for sure. I like that you revised an actual lesson. I think your ideas and the visual suggestions already made would make for an outstanding assignment.

Oscar,

I think the activity transformed into 2.0 has much more meaning. One aspect of the activity that you may want to think about is intentionally selecting cities in different vegetation regions. Maybe some coastal, arid, and rainforest type of climates. I believe it would highlight for the kids the fact that the food people consume on a regular basis has to do with their climate and vegetation region to an extent. It may make the assignment easier for yourself if you could select areas that should have some obvious differences.
